A Coach’s Last Game
My son has played baseball for about four years. He enjoys baseball and likes being part of a team. He has fun being out there with his friends whether they are on his team or the opposing side on a particular night. Baseball is not where his true talents lie, and when he told me he didn’t want to play anymore, I was heartbroken.
Baseball has always been my favorite sport. I played baseball growing up for years, and after high school, played in softball leagues for years. After having children, finding the time for this hobby was difficult, so when my son was old enough to play, I was so excited.
The Experience
Coaching has been a wonderful experience. Over the past four years, I had the opportunity to pass on some of the knowledge I learned from some great coaches I had growing up. Just being out on the field is nostalgic. The team had a game under the lights one recent summer night. Playing under the lights was amazing. Made you feel like you were in the big leagues. Coaching involves teaching so many different skills. It’s not just the technical knowledge of the game, or the proper techniques for hitting and fielding. You also have to coach for the right attitude. Children often feel all of their emotions in full view of the public.
